What do Town and Parish Councils do?

Town and parish councils are the first tier of local government and there are over 10,000 such councils across the country.

Depending on the size of the council, they can be responsible for:

• allotments
• car parks
• parks and open spaces
• celebrations and festivals
• community and leisure centres
• litter bins
• street lights

They can also have a role in improving the quality of life such as funding community projects and services and to represent the area on outside bodies on planning, policing and health.
